Moonshine – Barn Owl – Born: April 1999 (She’s almost 19 years old!)
Moonshine was bought to Wendy at just 2 years old, with a broken leg. Wendy helped to mend Moonshine’s leg and trained her to be the wonderful bird she is today. Moonshine loves saying hello to people and is very much a superstar (and doesn’t she know it!) |
Ash
South African Owl Ash came to Wendy in 2013 after the breeder was going to euthanize her because she could not breed. She had gone wild in the aviary; however Wendy managed to train her to be steady on the fist, which needed a lot of patience. Ash is a very content little owl but very strong willed and will let Wendy know if she’s not getting her way! |
Rajani
Malaysian Brown Wood Owl Rajani was born with a malformed beak, which has been repaired and is now much better. However it meant she couldn’t be used to breed as she may pass down the deformity. When Wendy first got her Rajani was terrified of hands but now, thanks to Wendy, she can be handled. Rajani is now very friendly and likes coming out to say hello but she still doesn’t like being touched. |
Jazmine
Indian Eagle Owl Jasmine was rescued by Wendy when she became unwanted by her owner. Owls take a lot of looking after – 24/7 – especially if you want to keep them tame and no one wants to look after them when owners are on holiday! They can become forgotten in the Aviary and are very difficult to retrain, which was exactly what happened to poor Jazmine. Jazmine took a lot of hard work to gain trust but now she and Wendy make a great team and she is Wendy’s best flying bird! |
Bryher
European Eagle Owl Bryher is a big character and a big softie who loves being cuddled! Bryher was rescued from a breeder who had unfortunately been breeding mother to son, father to daughter, over and over. Consequently, Bryher is very inbred and amongst other things, very small for a male. But we love him! |
Branwen
Wait - That’s not an owl! The very special Branwen is a gorgeous 3 year old Raven and a vital part of the team. Branwen was bought to Wendy after her parents wrecked her nest, so the breeders asked Wendy to take her on. Due to trauma when she hatched, she lost a toe and her left eyelid is weak. However this doesn’t hold her back and she is not a bird to be messed with! Wendy is great at handling her - but she does have an amazingly powerful beak and bite. Branwen has a big character though and can even talk. She can speak Cornish. |
